Hollywood’s acting community gathered Sunday night at the Shrine Auditorium & Expo Hall as the 32nd annual Actor Awards unfolded in a night full of emotion, surprises and strong Oscar season signals. The ceremony, formerly known as the Screen Actors Guild Awards and streamed live on Netflix, celebrated the best performances in film and television from the past year.

The biggest winner of the night was the supernatural period thriller Sinners, which took home the prestigious Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture award and propelled its lead into a major victory. Actor Michael B. Jordan captured the Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Leading Role statuette for his dual portrayal of twin brothers in the 1930s-set blues and vampire saga, beating out heavyweights including Timothée Chalamet and Leonardo DiCaprio. The moment drew loud applause as presenter Viola Davis cheered enthusiastically before announcing his name.

Jessie Buckley continued her awards-season momentum by winning Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Leading Role for her role in Hamnet, a powerful period drama that has resonated with critics and audiences alike.

In supporting categories, Sean Penn was honoured with Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Supporting Role for One Battle After Another, a film that had dominated earlier award shows. Amy Madigan caused one of the night’s biggest upsets by winning Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Supporting Role for her comic turn in the horror-comedy Weapons.

Television performers also had a strong showing. The Pitt won Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series, while its star Noah Wyle collected the award for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Drama Series. In comedy, The Studio was the big winner, taking both Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble and individual honours for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Comedy Series for Seth Rogen and Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Comedy Series for the late Catherine O’Hara, accepted on her behalf with heartfelt tributes.

Other television winners included Keri Russell for drama and Michelle Williams for her work in a limited series. Younger performers such as Owen Cooper were recognised in television movie and limited series categories.

The evening also honoured a lifetime of achievement. Veteran actor Harrison Ford received the Life Achievement Award, delivering an emotional speech that reflected on his decades-long career and his gratitude for continuing to work with passion.

While the ceremony was celebratory in spirit, it underlined the importance these awards play as an indicator of Academy Awards trends. With Sinners leading in both major acting and ensemble categories, industry watchers are now looking to the Oscars in mid-March with fresh anticipation.
