A Life of Friendship, Music and Generosity
With love, gratitude and cherished memories, family and friends will gather to celebrate the life of Mark Pesek, a lifelong member of the Victoria community whose friendship, generosity and genuine interest in others touched countless lives.
Mark grew up in downtown Victoria around Pesek’s Western Center, the family business owned by his parents, Charles W. and Libruse Pesek. Those early years helped foster a lasting appreciation for his community, its people and its history.
He graduated from Saint Joseph High School and went on to work for Southern Pacific Railroad, where he spent his career until his retirement.
Mark never met a stranger. With a welcoming smile and a generous heart, he had a remarkable ability to turn acquaintances into friends. He was always willing to lend a hand, whether helping people at the Downtown Senior Citizens Center or simply being there when one of his many friends needed him.
Books and reading held a special place in Mark’s life from an early age. He once recalled a summer vacation in his youth when he read 50 books, proudly stacking them in a towering pile about as tall as he was!
That childhood love of reading stayed with him throughout his life. Mark was a longtime supporter of the Friends of the Victoria Public Library and could often be found enjoying the Friends’ book sales, discussing guitar magazines with library staff and encouraging others to support the library and its work.
Mark also found happiness in the things that brought people together and made life interesting. An automotive enthusiast, he enjoyed the excitement of the races at Aloe Racetrack during its active years and had a special appreciation for vintage automobiles, their craftsmanship and their history.
Music was another important part of Mark’s life. He enjoyed guitars, the songs of Willie Nelson and the unique spirit of the Kerrville Folk Festival. He found joy in plants and gardens, caring for the Earth, celebrating his heritage, listening to good music, admiring a classic automobile, restoring his old red truck and, most importantly, spending time with people.
His legacy can be found not only in the years he lived, but in the friendships he formed, the people he helped and the simple joys he shared with those around him. It lives on in shared stories, familiar songs, treasured books and memories, and in every act of kindness extended to another person in his honor.
Family and friends are invited to a Remembrance and Celebration of Mark’s life on Wednesday, September 9, 2026, beginning at 5:00 p.m. in the Bronte Room of the Victoria Public Library, 302 N. Main St., Victoria.
Perhaps the best way to honor Mark is not only to remember him, but to carry a little of his spirit with us.
So, in Mark’s memory, take the time to read a good book. Smile and greet a stranger, or welcome an old friend with genuine enthusiasm. Listen to the music you love, or better yet, put on a little Willie Nelson. Stop to appreciate a beautiful garden or an old automobile. Enjoy a good meal at Ramsey’s or the Water Well Cafe, two of Mark’s favorite local spots, and take a moment to visit with the people around you, just as Mark would have done.
Support a place in your community that matters to you. Reach out to someone who could use a friend and offer a helping hand when you can.
Most of all, be generous with your kindness. Take the time to talk, to listen and to let people know you are truly glad to see them. You may never know how much that simple gesture means. Your kindness might just be the best part of someone’s day.
That would be a fitting way to remember Mark Pesek: not only by celebrating a life well lived, but by carrying forward the friendship, curiosity, generosity and joy that made his life so special.
