The Power of “No”

By Pastor Darla Lawrence

Growing up, most of us heard the word “no” more times than we probably cared to. Sometimes it ruffled our feathers, disappointed us, or even hurt our feelings. But as we grew older, we began to understand that many of those “nos” were given for our protection.

Think about a child who is about to run into a busy intersection. A parent’s firm “No!” may stop them in their tracks and keep them from harm. In that moment, the child may not understand why they are being told no—but the parent sees the danger they cannot.

Our relationship with God can be much the same.

There are times when we pray and ask the Lord for something, only to feel disappointed when the answer seems to be “no.” We may wonder why God hasn’t given us what we asked for or why the door we wanted opened remains closed.

But what if God’s “no” is actually His protection?

God sees what we cannot see. He knows the hurt, pain, disappointment, and consequences that may come from something we desperately want. What feels like a closed door today may be God’s way of keeping us from something that could ultimately harm us or disrupt the path He has for our lives.

This month, take some time to reflect on the things you are asking God for. Ask yourself:

  • Do I really need this?
  • Will it benefit my walk with Christ?
  • Am I trusting God’s wisdom, even when His answer isn’t the one I hoped for?

Sometimes, the greatest blessing isn’t found in getting a “yes.” Sometimes, it is found in trusting God with His “no.”

Remember, when God says no, He hasn’t stopped caring. His no may be the very thing that protects you, redirects you, and prepares you for something better.
