What makes this production especially meaningful is the people bringing it to life. Nearly half of the cast is made up of middle school, high school, and college students. All are volunteers. They show up not for applause or recognition, but because they love it. They come dedicated, eager, and fully invested in every rehearsal, every song, and every scene.
At the center of it all is Michael Teer, who takes on the role of the Baker while also serving as the theatre’s Executive Director. Teer is celebrating 22 years with Theatre Victoria. Many will remember him from his last onstage appearance as Lord Farquaad in Shrek. Over the years he has both directed and performed, and now he returns to the spotlight once more.
For Teer, stepping back onto the stage feels like coming home. Sharing this production with the community he has helped nurture for more than two decades makes the experience even more special.
Emma Milam, who plays Cinderella, has quite literally grown up within these theatre walls. She began performing here at just four years old and has been part of the Theatre Victoria family ever since. Now a recent graduate of St. Mary’s University with plans to pursue dental school, Emma continues to make time for the stage that helped shape her.
She describes each production as something living and ever changing.
“Every production is different and creates a living community that is flowing and changing making it a beautiful experience when being a part of this theatre and production. We are a welcoming family. I love seeing and going through the process of the show. It is a great experience you get to share with others. Everybody grows together.”
Her words reflect what is evident in rehearsal. There is trust. There is laughter. There is a shared commitment to telling a story together.
Austin Caballero, who plays a Villager, is experiencing this theatre family for the first time. Though he has previous theatre experience elsewhere, this marks his debut with Theatre Victoria and his very first musical. Performing in Into the Woods had long been on his bucket list.
New to both the theatre and the community, Austin says he has been met with warmth and encouragement at every turn. The group chemistry, he notes, makes the experience even more meaningful. Offstage, he dedicates his time to providing healthcare to the community, bringing that same spirit of service and care into his performance.
Together, this cast represents something larger than a single production. It is for students and professionals. It is newcomers and veterans. It is a blend of generations working side by side, learning from one another, and building something beautiful.
Into the Woods will be presented February 13 through 15 and again February 19 through 22. Tickets are available at www.theatrevictoria.org.
As the final rehearsals wrap and opening night approaches, one thing is certain. This is more than a show. It is a celebration of community, dedication, and the joy of storytelling shared by a welcoming theatre family in the heart of Victoria.
