On 100 Acres Near Bloomington, 13 Zebras Have Found a Place to Roam, Raise Their Young, and Simply Be Zebras
By Revista Magazine
In the quiet countryside of South Texas, 13 zebras graze beneath the wide Texas sky. Near Bloomington, the nonprofit organization Keep Bloomington Beautiful (KBB) has created a 100-acre sanctuary where the animals can live with space, dignity, and freedom. Seven foals have been born on the property.
A Different Kind of Home
Zebras are intelligent, social animals whose lives revolve around movement, family relationships, and natural instincts. KBB envisioned open pastures where they could explore, interact with their herd, and enjoy a more natural environment.
A place where zebras could simply be zebras.
One Hundred Acres of Possibility
KBB acquired approximately 100 acres near Bloomington in 2022, developing secure grazing areas, a water basin supplied with fresh well water, and sand-covered spaces for dust bathing. Food, veterinary attention, secure fencing, and ongoing care help support the animals’ well-being.
Seven Little Miracles
Seven zebra foals have been born at the Bloomington sanctuary. Their arrival represents a meaningful milestone in KBB’s mission. Newborn zebras can stand and walk shortly after birth, allowing them to remain close to their mothers and the herd. Each develops a distinctive stripe pattern.
The Importance of Family
Zebras rely on social relationships within their herds. At the sanctuary, opportunities to interact naturally with other zebras are an important part of their well-being.
Compassion Without an Audience
The zebras are not trained to perform or entertain visitors. Public access and direct interaction are restricted to minimize disturbances, while KBB shares photographs, videos, and educational information online.
Sometimes, the best way to appreciate a wild animal is to give it the space it needs.
A Small Community With an Extraordinary Heart
The sanctuary reflects KBB’s broader commitment to Bloomington through environmental beautification, recreational improvements, walking trails, and charitable initiatives. The organization also supports Dorothy’s Hope Kitchen and transitional housing efforts for people facing difficult circumstances.
Compassion is not limited to one cause, one community, or even one species. Through its work with people, public spaces, and animals, KBB demonstrates how a small community can make a meaningful difference.
What Does It Really Mean to Give an Animal a Good Life?
A good habitat requires food, clean water, veterinary attention, and room to move freely, interact with other zebras, and express natural behaviors.
For the 13 zebras living near Bloomington, those opportunities are at the heart of a simple mission: creating a place where they can thrive.
